January 4 update: After
reviewing the 2:30
PM update from the National Weather Service I have decided to cancel
the foray scheduled for this Sunday.
In addition to the probable interruption of the foray by rain, it is
quite likely that Ortega Highway may be in a hazardous condition after
24-36 hours of rain. Under these circumstances I believe that canceling
the foray is the prudent thing to do.
I will not schedule any more forays in the Santa Ana Mountains until
after the storm, when I have had a chance to find out if there has been
any damage to Ortega Highway.

In response to the recent rains LAMS will be holding its
second foray of the 2007-08
mushroom season and first of the new year at the El
Cariso "Big Woods"
in the Cleveland National Forest.

PLEASE NOTE: This foray will be held on Sunday,
January 6--NOT on Saturday, the usual day for LAMS forays. Please
do not travel to the foray site on Saturday.
Directions: From the San Diego Freeway, I-5, in
San Juan Capistrano, drive EAST approximately 22.5 miles on Ortega
Highway, State Route 74, to the paved and signed side road (Long Canyon
Road) to Los Pinos Forestry Camp. Turn LEFT and park off the road
100 yards north of the highway. Note that there is ongoing road
construction on Highway 74 several miles west of the foray
location. On weekends, travel times may (or may not) be
affected. A

From I-15 in Lake Elsinore, (Central Street exit) drive WEST
approximately 11 miles on State Route 74 and turn RIGHT on the paved and
signed side road to Los Pinos Forestry Camp (Long Canyon Road) and park
off the road 100 yards north of the highway. NOTE: You will pass a
ranger station and the El Cariso Oaks store on your left before you
reach the side road to Los Pinos Camp.
If conditions merit further collecting, we may visit
other locations nearby.

General
information for first time foray participants
Here
is a map showing the general vicinity of the foray site. Please
note that it is inaccurate in not showing that Long Canyon Road connects
with Ortega Highway--it does.
Please allow yourself enough time to reach
the foray site--typically
around 1.5 hours from either the Los Angeles or San Diego metro areas.
AS USUAL ON ALL FORAYS, BRING A LUNCH,
WATER, AND WARM
CLOTHING TO THE FORAY.
Several
persons have inquired if carpools are available for foray participants.
A LAMS carpool Yahoo Group page has been created to assist foray
participants in joining or forming carpools.
However, it is up to potential foray participants to select appropriate
carpool/rideshare partners.
LAMS will not attempt to match carpool/rideshare partners.

If interested in forming or joining a carpool you should click
the “Join This Group!” button, fill out the information requested by
Yahoo to join the group and then send a message to the group indicating
your interest in carpooling.
NOTES
#1. In
keeping with LAMS policy, all foray participants, members or not, will
be required to complete and sign a liability release in order to participate in the
foray.
#2. You will
also need a forest parking permit called an "Adventure Pass"
to park in the National Forest. "Adventure Passes" are
available at National Forest ranger stations and at many sporting good
stores, such as REI or Sport Chalet. One day permits are $5.00 and
annual permits are $30.00. Parking passes may also be for sale at
the small general store in El Cariso Village just east of the foray
site.

#3. I also ask all members to refrain from
collecting in the announced foray location in the 10 days prior to the
foray on January 6. "Poaching" on announced foray
sites before a group event diminishes the foray experience of many
people for the benefit of a few (or one). This kind of activity has
caused hard feelings in other mushroom clubs. LAMS has been remarkably
free of this kind of divisive behavior. Let's not start now.
